Just a one degree shift can make all the difference

One of my favourite movies of all time is Six Degrees of Separation. From it I learnt the fact that each of us is only six degrees away from everyone else on the planet. From further exploration I learnt the immense power of one degree. In my business for example I know that the best referral is to a person one degree away from the referrer.

I have also learnt from this concept that little things make the big difference. Just a one degree shift in what we feel, think, or do can make profound differences to our success.

You may enjoy the one degree website with its focus on climate change and how one degree shifts in what we do can save our planet.

Think about making one degree shifts in everything you do. You will be amazed at the difference it makes.

“If you don’t believe little things make a big difference, then you have never been to bed with a mosquito.” Anita Roddick

John Elkington – sustainability pioneer

One of my heroes is John Elkington, the originator of ‘The Triple Bottom Line. His work was instrumental in my development of the five-fold bottom line. John’s company ‘SustainAbility’ has been at the forefront of helping businesses embrace sustainability since 1987. You will find some great insight on their website. Sustainability is arguably the issue we face for the foreseeable future.

‘Seachange’ happening in the attitudes of business leaders

Are you one who has changed your attitude?

I have been catching up on a bit of reading today. An article by Jennifer Hewett in The Weekend Australian newspaper of 27-28 October 2007 caught my eye, ‘Corporate captains to focus on society’. Hewett writes about the final address by outgoing President of Business Council of Australia Michael Chaney. One of Australia’s most respected business leaders Chaney is quoted “As business leaders, we need to do much more to incorporate objectives for social prosperity into the reform debate.” “We need to be equally proficient in the language of social prosperity as we are in economic reform.”

Great words. I am witnessing more and more business leaders living these words every day. Are you one of them?

World Business Council for Sustainable Development

There is no doubt that sustainability is a major issue facing humanity. A group I admire for their work in this area is the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
I am a regular visitor to President Bjorn Stigson's blog (follow the link on home page above). One statement of his that occupies pride of place in some quotes on my office wall is "Business cannot succeed in a society that fails."
